I’m Dave, I created the “Celine a Scene” Facebook page, you’re probably wondering what I’m doing freeze framed on this web article, here is my story…
Back in July 2016, I came across an incredible video on Facebook, which kickstarted an amazing journey for me. You must have seen it; someone had taken the very end scene of The Force Awakens where (spoiler alert) Rey finds Luke Skywalker standing on a cliff side and hands to him his lost lightsaber, but an absolute genius had used video editing trickery to change the lightsaber to a microphone and have Luke sing the crescendo moment of Celine Dion’s “All by Myself”. It was incredible. It was funny, but at the same time it was emotional; and gave me chills and goosebumps.
I thought to myself that this song actually made the scene better. I wondered if I added it to other scenes that had people all by themselves, they might turn out equally as epic, and so I added it to the scene from Game of Thrones where (spoiler alert) Cersei Lannister uses that green fire stuff and blows up everyone, leaving her standing alone on a balcony with a glass of wine, looking on at the devastation she had caused. It really worked. So I added the same song to the scene where Indiana Jones triggers the sequence of booby traps in the beginning scenes of Raiders of the Lost Ark .. it worked for this scene too. I added to some other scenes, and it really did increase the emotion and make them more epic. The videos were starting to be shared thousands of times, people were loving them and leaving really positive comments and sending requests for others. My page’s Like number was increasing rapidly, and I was having so much fun.
I coined a term, to “Celine a Scene” .. to add Celine Dion to a scene to make it more epic.
Then I saw a video from a page “Better With Titanic”, this page had already been adding a Celine Dion song to scenes to make them better, I realised now my page was not very original at all. That song was “My Heart Will Go On”. … and I seen also on Facebook that along with “Better With Titanic” there was so many other pages dedicated to adding “My Heart Will Go On” to various scenes… ! To change my page up a bit and jump on the “My Heart Will Go On” bandwagon (and since my page was Celine a Scene); I tried adding this newly discovered scene enhancer to a scene of my own. The video blew up big time.
This song seemed to be the song that people loved the most, and so for the next few videos I added that song instead. My page exploded!
“Better With Titanic” got in touch with me, and we chatted and he was happy to know he had inspired the new direction of my page. People don’t know this but in the early days we actually used to confer about what scenes we were going to do, to make sure we weren’t doubling up the posts, but eventually we parted ways; I was too small time for him to worry about I suppose, and at the time his page was much larger than mine. It must be said, that adding “My Heart Will Go On” was not my genius idea, it was the genius idea of the guy who runs the “Better With Titanic” page.
(I’ll just put that out there, since the lawyers are swooping in ….. LOL)
Fast forward approximately 7 months later; “Celine a Scene” is a bona fide internet meme. It is out of control, every man, woman and his dog is doing it. My page had grown to an audience over 381,000 with millions upon millions of views on the videos, and it seemed every day I was receiving the same amount of requests, asking for various scenes to be done. It was eating hours out of my day and evening, but I was enjoying creating them so much. Steven Seagal’s people got in touch and asked me to add Celine to one of his movies. Jordan Belfort (Yes the actual Wolf of Wallstreet)’s people got in touch with me and asked me to do a scene from The Wolf of Wallstreet. Celebrities were messaging me telling me how they loved the page. Girls were throwing themselves at me (I just made that part up). I had people sending me webcam videos asking me to join their religion (yes it got pretty weird), and men were sending me nudes thinking that I was Celine Dion (I’m not sure why they’d think that would impress Celine Dion).
It was crazy and I have so many unbelievable stories to tell.
Probably the craziest moment was when they brought out Celine Dion herself to that very moment of her song at the 2017 Grammys … what do you mean they would have done that anyway because that’s Celine Dion and it’s her song? Oh ok I see what you mean. Still, I was having a blast.
People didn’t realise this, but for every 3 or 4 videos I uploaded, Facebook was blocking me from uploading and sending me warnings about copyright material. Sometimes I was blocked for a week! I just kept uploading though with the hope that it was coming under the “Parody” rule that Facebook has.. that being, if your content can be considered “parody” then copyright material “may” be allowed to be uploaded. However, every time I was uploading a video and ignoring the warnings, I was just adding weight to the case that the page will probably get shut down.
Out of no where, my YouTube account gets “permanently suspended” with no warning. If you search “Celine a Scene” on YouTube, there are countless videos uploaded by many different people, all referencing “Celine a Scene” in their title .. they are still online. But they closed me down. Very strange. I knew something was brewing.
I knew that time was running out, and one day Facebook would probably review the page, see that it was littered with copyright breaches; posting music I didn’t have the rights to, and movie scenes I also didn’t have the rights to, and changing up the scenes to ways they were not originally intended (probably another breach in itself). I knew the day would come that the people who own the song “My Heart Will Go On” would get in touch and shut me down.
That day came.
On 22nd of February 2017 after correspondence with Sony ATV and Twentieth Century Fox; I was notified that they do not approve the use of the composition in the way I am using it, and that I have to remove all of the videos from the page. (This is where I would usually add the *YOOOOOOOURE, HEEEEEEERE….*, but I’m now not allowed to do it, sorry).
Yes folks, to “Celine a Scene” is now illegal. A meme became illegal. LOL.
This is devastating to me. It makes you question what exactly is allowed on Facebook, when you are watching all of the videos of movie scenes, the different music that is posted on there, and the other memes that are based on songs … are none of them allowed to be posted? What about every single video that features “My Heart Will Go On” posted on the internet; will they all eventually disappear? The internet has traditionally been a place where content creators have taken content that is already out there and mixed them up to create something new. It’s punk. It’s what the original Hip Hop pioneers used to do with sampling. This is just a different platform. It seem’s laws eventually catch up with these people though if they don’t have permission, and they get shut down.
To all other pages that use “My Heart Will Go On” on their videos, good luck, the lawyers are watching.
It’s been an incredible journey, thank you for Liking the page and for sharing the videos, and although I can’t post “Celine a Scene” videos anymore; THE PAGE WILL GO ON.
I’m planning funny videos and content already as you read this, so stick around, and watch me turn this page in to something so good that even the song that makes everything better can’t make it better.
